How to use and control better your WifiAway
How can I control my data use?
Through your Customer Area, you can check your approximate data consumption. We obtain updated data through the operator every few days. The operator is who manages the limitations. For checking your consumption there are two main ways, the “consumption meter”, and the SMS that the operator sends you.
Other than your Customer Area, you can check your data consumption through your device. Remember while you are reading this that the data you do not use in a month, does not accumulate for the next one.
Click on your device shape to see instructions
If not, please follow these steps:
1) Connect to your Wifi device (even if Internet is not working, you need to connect to the device, as it generates the web page you need to see)
2) Write in the navigation bar of your browser: 192.168.0.1
3) Wait until you see the following window (click to enlarge):

Method 1: Consumption meter
In the screen, search for zone 1, where it says "Volumen Total" or "Total Volume". This number will tell you how much data you have consumed, since you started using the device. This meter, in some rare occasions, resets by itself, so it is more reliable to see the operator messages (see next).
Method 2: Operator Messages
The operator sends you three messages per month depending on your consumption (area 2 in the image):
- The first one when you have consumed 13.5 Gb, the 90% of the 15 Gb at 4G speed. Text of the message: “Consumido el 90% de MB de tu Tarifa….” (Actually you have not consumed 90% of the total data, but of that first 15Gb at 4G speed)
- The second one when you have consumed 30 Gb. After this SMS, the 4G wifi device will still work at 3G speed, pretty fast yet. Text of the message: “Consumido el 100% de MB de tu Tarifa. Ahora se reduce la velocidad…”
- The third one when you have consumed 40 Gb. After this message you will not be able to surf any longer. Text of the message: “Uso maximo excedido. Se reduce la velocidad…”
In the screen of your device, you will see a consumption meter that lets you know how much data you consume in each session. The number will reset every time you switch off the device, but it will serve you to detect exhaustive uses.
Method 2: Operator Messages
1) Connect to your Wifi device (even if Internet is not working, you need to connect to the device, as it generates the web page you need to see)
2) Write in the navigation bar of your browser: 192.168.8.1
3) Wait until you see a window that shows the number of messages:
2) Write in the navigation bar of your browser: http://airbox.home/ or type 192.168.1.1 on the browser bar if you are using an Apple device
3) Wait until you see the following window (click to enlarge):

In the screen, in the second column (marked in the image), you will see the accumulated data you have spent on the month
If you are surprised by the data you have already consumed, you should visit in this page the section “I have ran out of data and don’t know how – I haven’t done anything weird”
What consumes more?
Moderate Consumption: Use of social networks like Facebook
Low Consumption: Surf the Internet, send emails, WhatsApp, use maps, and most of the normal use cases.
You might also want to visit the section “I have ran out of data and don’t know how – I haven’t done anything weird”
The counter in my 4G wifi device does not reset, even though I have renewed my subscription/we have started a new month
As the month begins on the 1st, Vodafone will start counting again towards your monthly allowance – no matter whether you reset these counters or not (the counter of your 4G wifi device has no communication with Vodafone or WifiAway).
The counter only serves you to keep some track. If you start the month with “X” Gb in the counter, and you have 20Gb for the next month, you then know the 4G wifi device will stop working when the counter arrives to “X+20Gb”.
I have run out of data, and I want more, what should I do?
Resolve your problems
What to do when something goes wrong
Everything looks OK in the 4G wifi device, but Internet doesn’t work
It is possible that you have consumed the full data allowance (usually 20Gb). To check that, please try the following:
– Connect your Smartphone to the WifiAway 4G wifi device and try sending a WhatsApp (text). If after a few seconds that works but nothing else does (browsing, etc), you have consumed all your data. When that happens, our operator lowers the speed to such low levels that almost nothing works, but WhatsApp texts do as they consume very little bandwidth
– Alternatively, while you are connected to the WifiAway 4G wifi device, input this in the address bar of your browser: 192.168.0.1 – You will see a webpage with the SMS your 4G wifi device has received in the middle. The operator sends three messages in a month having to do with data consumption:
- One when you have consumed 13.5 Gb, which is 90% of the 15 Gb at 4G speed. Text of the SMS: “Consumido el 90% de MB de tu Tarifa….” (In reality, you have not consumed 90% of the total, but of the first 15Gb at 4G speed)
- The second one when you consume 15 Gb. After this message, your 4G wifi device will keep working well at 3G speed, still quiet fast. Text of the SMS: “Consumido el 100% de MB de tu Tarifa. Ahora se reduce la velocidad…”
- The third one, when you have consumed the 20 Gb. After this one, you will not be able to browse or do almost anything. Text of the SMS: “Uso maximo excedido. Se reduce la velocidad…”
If you have consumed your data and need more, please review the rest of the webpage – there are several questions and answers regarding this matter. If not, please write to support@wifiaway.es describing the problem. Please include this information:
-
- What exactly do you mean with “not working”? Does the 4G wifi device switch on? Does it go slow? Does it not go at all?
- IF YOUR 4G WIFI DEVICE HAS A SCREEN: What does it show on the screen: does it show 4G at the top left? Does it show 3G? Does it say “Vodafone” in the middle or something else? What ammount of data does it show at the bottom? Or does it not show any number at all? Ideally, please make a photo and send it to us
- IF YOUR 4G WIFI DEVICE DOES NOT HAVE A SCREEN: while being connected to the 4G wifi device, type in your browser address bar 192.168.0.1 and tell us what it says in the following parts of “Red domestica” -> Estado, Red, Tiempo de conexión y Volumen Total. Ideally, take a screenshot and send it to us. Tell us too what lights appear in the front part of your 4G wifi device.
- Let us know what happened when trying to send a whatsapp (wait a few seconds after sending it)
- Send us this information to support@wifiaway.es
Internet works but it is slow/disconnects
Check if it is a coverage problem:
- If your 4G wifi device has a screen, look at the top left corner, if it shows low coverage, and if it says “2G” or “E” (in stead of “4G”, “3G” or “H”)
- If your 4G wifi device doesn’t have a screen, check if the left light of the 4G wifi device is yellow.
If it is a coverage problem, move your 4G wifi device to places near the outside, such as windows. Wait a couple of minutes to ensure the 4G wifi device updates the signal. If this solves the problem, keep the 4G wifi device near places where coverage is good.
I have ran out of data and don’t know how – I haven’t done anything weird
- Operating System updates (your mac/iphone/android auto updating the operating system). You can also see a history of updates in your PC to check if that caused a large consumption lately:
-MAC:http://forums.macrumors.com/threads/list-of-updates.1436207/#post-15610846
-Windows:http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/which-windows-updates-installed#1TC=windows-7
- Programs that auto-upload / backup your photos/videos on your smartphone/PC (Apple iCloud/iTunes, Google+, or sometimes Facebook or Dropbox if the feature if it is enabled). There are ways to allow them to do so only in some networks, not to consume all your data.
- iPhone/Android apps that silently consume data every minute
There are also things that you may be doing that consume really a lot:
- Video streaming / download / torrents (movies or series, not a few youtube minutes)
- Video skype/facetime calls
- Using backup programs (like Dropbox) if you are creating/downloading many big files
- Sharing the connection with many people that hasn’t been connected for a while. When they connect, their apps begin to update consuming lots of data.
- Using streaming devices as Apple Play or ChromeCast
TO SOLVE THE PROBLEM, and see what is consuming your data, you might want to do the following:
- If you are using WINDOWS, there is a way to treat your connection in a special way so that it doesn’t consume data for non-important, high consuming tasks such as OS updates. Please see this article: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-ph/windows-8/metered-internet-connections-frequently-asked-questions. I have also used this free program to monitor data consumption in the past. It may be helpful in your case.http://www.cucusoft.com/netguard.aspx
- For MAC, there is this: http://mac.appstorm.net/roundups/internet-roundup/4-ways-to-monitor-bandwidth-usage-on-your-mac/
- For iPHONES, this one (I have not tried it, let me know if you do): https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/datacare-wifi-3g-4g-data-usage/id785252393?mt=8
- For ANDROID this article is great: http://www.androidbeat.com/2014/02/track-manage-mobile-data-wi-fi-usage-android/
The 4G wifi device doesn’t charge the battery
- Try, if you tend to keep it plugged, to unplug it once in a while until it is fully discharged. Then plug it again and use it as normal.
- Switch it off at night as often as you can, and charge it during the whole night. It will help not only the battery, but the 4G wifi device performance too.
If your 4G wifi device has begun behaving weird regarding the battery, by completely discharging and completely charging the 4G wifi device two or three times, and it should start working as normal again. If not, please email support@wifiaway.es and we will help you as soon as possible. It is very useful for us if you describe the problem accurately, and also the steps you have tried already
I can’t find the wifi network
- After turning on the 4G wifi device, the 4G wifi device takes a few seconds to generate the network. Wait a few moments and search for the network again with your PC or Smartphone
- Search for networks that begin with “VodafoneMobile…” or “WifiAway…”, and try with your password.
- Search for it with another Smartphone or PC. Reset your PC or Smartphone and try again.
- Reset the 4G wifi device the following way: pull the back part out (one of its corners has a small hole where you can pull from), and while the 4G wifi device is on, press the reset button with a pen for five seconds. After that, look at the back of the back cover, and see a network name and password. Use these, if they are different that what was written on the label.
If still you don’t find the network, send us a photo of the front part of the 4G wifi device (with the screen or the lights), being the 4G wifi device on, to support@wifiaway.es
